HOUSTON -- Dallas Keuchel had a simple answer for what was working for him Tuesday night. "Everything," Keuchel said. "I felt good with every pitch." Keuchel (4-2) pitched a seven-hitter for his first major league shutout, leading the Houston Astros over the Texas Rangers 8-0. Keuchel struck out seven without a walk. He gave up just one extra-base hit, a double by Adrian Beltre in the first inning, and threw his second career complete game. "When youre able to plus and minus your fastball and have the type of command that Dallas has, hes able to ... cut the ball into the righties," Houston manager Bo Porter said. "He can sink it away from the righties. He runs it in on the lefties. He has confidence to throw his breaking ball, his changeup in any count." It was the second straight start where Keuchel hasnt walked anyone, which Porter said shows his confidence in attacking the strike zone. Keuchel didnt think that part of his line was a big deal. "I dont really think about that," he said. "When I throw strikes Im good, if I dont Im not very good. So I just have to throw strikes and be good." L.J. Hoes and Carlos Corporan each homered and drove in three runs. The Astros were shut out 4-0 in the series opener, but jumped on Matt Harrison (1-1) for three runs in the second before he left with back stiffness. Hoes hit a two-run homer in the inning. "I felt OK warming up, but looking up (at the radar) I noticed that my velocity just kept going down further and further," Harrison said. "Then I knew at that point, something wasnt right." He said he will go to Dallas on Wednesday to visit a doctor. They were up by four before a four-run fifth inning powered by an RBI single by Hoes and a three-run shot by Corporan. The roof at Minute Maid Park was open to start the game, but it was closed during the eighth inning with a storm approaching. It was the first Astros game where the roof was both open and closed since 2006. Houston was up by four before a four-run fifth inning powered by an RBI single by Hoes and a three-run shot by Corporan. Texas slugger Prince Fielder was thrown out in the fourth, trying to stretch the first of two singles into a double in the fourth. He was initially ruled safe, but Porter challenged the call and it was overturned. Keuchel struck out the side in the second inning and was helped by his defence turning double plays in the third, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. "He was changing speeds really well," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "And when he had to make a pitch, he threw that sinker. We just could not centre it. Everything we hit, we just kept beating it into the ground. And he kept throwing it, and we just kept beating it into the ground." Designated hitter Chris Carter, who entered the game batting just .168, had a season-high three hits, Jose Altuve tripled and doubled and rookie George Springer had an RBI and walked three times. It was the first time since 2006 that a Houston rookie walked three times in a game. Hoes hit his first homer since opening day, a two-run shot to the Crawford Boxes in left field to give Houston a 2-0 lead in the second. Altuve hit a two-out double before Springer walked. Harrison was replaced by Justin Germano after an RBI single by Dexter Fowler made it 3-0. Harrison allowed four hits and walked three before he was pulled after 1 2-3 innings to tie his shortest career outing. He laboured from the start and had already thrown 55 pitches when he left the game. NOTES: Keuchels other complete game came on June 23, 2012, against Cleveland. ... Goldeyes third baseman Ryan Pineda drove in three runs and the pitching staff didnt allow an earned run, as Winnipeg downed Kansas City 6-3 in American Association exhibition action at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas. Winnipeg broke open the scoreless game with three runs in the top of the second inning. After Josh Mazzola walked, Donnie Webb singled and Casey Haerther walked, Pineda hit a two-run double. Haerther then scored on a Luis Alen ground out. Webb extended the Goldeyes lead to 4-0 an inning later when he singled in Reggie Abercrombie from second base. After three scoreless innings, Pineda led off the seventh inning with a solo home run and Winnipeg had a 5-0 advantage. Kansas City broke Winnipegs shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two out and two runners on base, Haerther had trouble with a fly ball that got caught in the wind. The ball fell to the ground, which allowed T-Bones third baseman Nick Giarraputo to score and the inning to continue. A couple walks and a single later, Kansas City had three runs on the board and Winnipegs lead was narrowed to 5-3. BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox have placed struggling right-hander Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended left knee. The move is retroactive to Tuesday and followed a bullpen session by Buchholz before Wednesday nights game against the Atlanta Braves. "We had a chance to sit down and talk to him before he went out on the field," manager John Farrell said before knowing the results of the session, "but were going to be cautious. We dont want to put him at risk of suffering any other type of injury, whether thats to the knee or shows up elsewhere. Weve got to be careful." The Red Sox recalled right-hander Alex Wilson from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Buchholzs roster spot. On Monday, Buchholz walked a career-high eight while allowing six runs in three-plus innings of an 8-6 win at Atlanta that ended Bostons 10-game losing streak. On Tuesday, Farrell said Buchholz continued pitching Monday after his left knee buckled. He said Buchholz initially denied that happened when catcher A.J. Pierzynski went to the mound. Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA in 10 starts. Last year he was 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 16 starts and made the AL All-Star team for the first time. In four post-season starts, he was 0-0 with a 4.35 ERA as Boston won the World Series. He had missed three months with a neck injury before coming off the disabled list on Sept. 10. Wilson pitched one inning in relief in two previous stints with Boston this season. At Pawtucket, he was 1-0 with five saves and a 1.42 ERA in 18 relief appearances. He made his major league debut last year, going 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA with Boston. Cheap Swingman Blazers Jerseys . BARCELONA, Spain -- Four days after affirming its European credentials by toppling Manchester City, Barcelona slumped to a stinging 3-1 loss at Real Sociedad to relinquish the provisional Spanish league lead to Real Madrid on Saturday. Gareth Bale scored a blistering long-range strike to help Madrid brush aside Elche 3-0 at home, and Barcelona was unable to match that with a win. Instead, it was overrun by Sociedads dynamic attack led by forwards Antoine Griezmann and Carlos Vela. Barcelonas defeat confirmed the change in course in the league title race over the past two months, leaving Madrid in command and waiting to see if Atletico can keep up when it visits Osasuna on Sunday. After starting the season with 13 wins and a draw, Barcelona has dropped points in four of its last seven games. Barcelona coach Gerard Martino shuffled his lineup from Tuesdays Champions League victory at City and tried to reinforce his defence by playing with two holding midfielders in Sergio Busquets and Alex Song. The move backfired when Song scored an own goal in the 32nd minute in the first of several defensive lapses that doomed the defending champions. Lionel Messi equalized in the 36th, only for Griezmann to restore the hosts advantage after an error by defender Marc Bartra in the 54th before setting up David Zurutuza in the 59th. The loss left Barcelona three points behind Madrid, the first time it has trailed its fierce rival this season. Atletico is also three points behind Madrid before it plays on Sunday. The last time Barcelona lost by more than one goal was a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in May 2013. Martino took the blame for the humbling defeat. "Real (Sociedad) deserved to win," he said. "I didnt make the correct reading of the game. The decision not to change was also a mistake." Madrid won its third straight game without Cristiano Ronaldo, who was finishing a three-game suspension. Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabeu in the 34th. Bale then squashed Elches timid second-half surge with a blast from about 25 metres in the 72nd before substitute Isco Alarcon sealed the victory in the 81st. Bale was having a discreet outing until his superb strike that hit the underside of the bar and bounced in, securing the three points that made Madrid the overnight pacesetters. "I said My goodness, what a goal when I saw the ball pass by," Madrid fullback Dani Carvajal said. Madrid will visit Schalke 04 on Wednesday in the Champions League final 16 enjoying an unbeaten streak of 26 games in all competitions. Madrid then plays at crosstown rival Atletico next weekend in a highly anticipated league meeting. Also, Celta Vigo fought back for a 1-1 draw at home against 10-man Getafe to leave the visitors winless in the last 10 rounds, while Malaga drew 0-0 at Almeria. Martino was dismissed by the referee during halftime, and Barcelonas first-year manager had to witness the rare sight of his team being thoroughly dismantled from the Anoeta Stadium stands as the festive home fans soaked up their big win. The victory moved Sociedad one point out of fourth place and Spains last Champions League spot as the Basque side deployed its best version of its up-tempo attack to take a good measure of vengeance for Barcelona eliminating it from the Copa del Rey the previous week. Sociedad was unlucky not to widen the final margin when a disheartened Barcelona appeared to tire in the final minutes. Vela almost capped his outstanding performance in the 81st but his shot hit the post. Sociedad went ahead when Gorka Elustondo muscled by Song to meet Sergio Canales cross, which Elustondo appeared to graze with his head before it hit Song in the chest and landed in the net. Messi combined with Martin Montoya to level when Sergio Busquets craftily let Montoyas pass run between his legs for Messi to rifle it inside the upright of Claudio Bravos goal. Sociedad, however, got the winner when Bartra headed Bravos goalkick back toward his own area, where Vela was quick to pounce and crossed for Griezmann to volley in his 15th league goal of the season. Cheap Sabres Jerseys . Kadri was dressed in a green jersey at Thursdays practice and skated as an extra forward on the teams fourth line as the Leafs. On the weekend, there were a few things that got me wondering: First, was this piece by Sarah McLellan about Coyotes LW Paul Bissonnette, who is hoping to expand his role beyond part-time fourth-line muscle. Among players with at least 100 minutes of 5-on-5 ice time this season, Bissonnette ranks seventh in points per 60 minutes, which may be a small-sample fluke, but theres a lot of room between Bissonnettes current role and that of a regular in the lineup. The Coyotes have made sure to put Bissonnette in situations where he can succeed, with offensive zone starts and relatively low quality of competition, but hes generated positive possession numbers over the past three seasons, enough to think that he might warrant consideration for more time. Trouble is, with the Coyotes life-and-death to make the playoffs, they dont seem inclined to give him that opportunity right now. The second thing that caught my attention was Flyers tough guy Jay Rosehill scoring a pretty nifty goal against the Bruins. And third, that was against the Bruins, a team that is sort of the prototype for the fighting teams, ranking second in the league with 46 fighting majors this season. The Bruins have Milan Lucic, a first-line winger who fights; Jarome Iginla, a first-line winger who fights; and Shawn Thornton, a fourth-line winger who fights and gets regular ice time (8:32 per game this year and played 22 playoff games last year). Injured D Adam McQuaid and rookie D Kevan Miller are also a couple of tough customers who play third pair minutes for the Bruins. Theres also been a lot of talk this year about Torontos fourth line which, for a time, included both Frazer McLaren and Colton Orr, and the relative ineffectiveness of that fourth line seemed to cause issues higher up the depth chart. Figuring out playing time for a line that employs two enforcers that dont have enough hockey skills to keep up is, at the very least, challenging. Finally, with the playoffs around the corner, the time will come when teams make hard lineup decisions and, in many cases, that means the designated enforcer goes to the press box. If he can play a bit, though, that can tilt the decision. So, all of this wondering led me to try and find out which of the leagues fighters are actually doing enough to warrant regular ice time; basically, who can play? One look at hockeyfights.com provided a list of 75 players that might be considered fighters (there are probably a few more that could have been included), but it was basically every player involved in at least five fights this season, plus a select few that had four and come with a reputation/track record (Steve Ott, Steve Downie, John Scott, Troy Bodie) and then Bissonnette, who has fought only three times in 37 games. There is an obvious top tier, which includes Iginla (with his most fights since 2009-2010), Lucic and Philadelphias Wayne Simmonds, forwards that play on scoring lines, but have an aggressive side that comes out on occasion. They might as well be excluded from the examination because, even with zero fights, they clearly produce enough offensively to play prominent roles on their respective teams. Teams can use tough guys in lower-leverage situations. As Tyler Dellow pointed out a couple of weeks ago, teams can be judicious in their use of their tough guys, which mitigates their liability, but if the tough guys cant play a lick, it makes it increasingly difficult to be judicious. It should be noted that not all fights, and fighters are created equally. There are heavyweights, who tend to only fight other heavyweights; there are agitators who end up fighting because theyre being called to task for one of (likely) many transgressions; and there are players who, battling for a spot in the lineup or consistent playing time, are willing to use that as one more reason for the team to keep them in the lineup. What makes a fighter useful enough to handle a regular fourth-line shift? Players that have at least 47% Corsi is a decent place to start. From a Dellow post last year, he determined averages for first, second, third and fourth-line players. Sure, theres some room for variance, but if the player is going to be used as more than as a spare part, he cant spend all of his shifts scrambling in the defensive zone. Among the 75 listed below, nearly half (36) had a Corsi over 47%. 23 were at 50.0% or better. Players that have at least an even Relative Corsi. From the list below, that includes only 15 of the 75 players, but that makes sense. Fourth-liners are unlikely to have better possession stats than players higher on the depth chart. There are a dozen players that have both a 50% Corsi and at least a break-even relative Corsi (actually, its 10, but Lucic and Iginla are just below that threshold.) If we can take the position that a fighter isnt likely to be the one driving his teams possession numbers, then if they arent significantly worse than their teammates, that at least puts them in consideration for a regular role. There are obvious exceptions to this case too, particularly when it comes to the Bruins, where the Patrice Bergeron line is so dominant that the likes of Gregory Campbell and Shawn Thornton have no hope of being close in terms of relative Corsi. Really, if a player fits in a teams top nine, theres not much question whether hes a useful player. Some are more useful than others, of course, but its not as if the league is overrun by third line forwards that dont even warrant a spot in the league. Maybe this should table should count as an appreciation for Patrick Maroon, the suddenly-valuable winger for the Ducks. While one of the leagues most active fighters, with 13, hes a strong possession player (54.8%) who, like most Ducks, has spent time on the wing with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, but hes been more productive recently while playing with Mathieu Perreault and Kyle Palmieri. Maroon has 12 points (3 G, 9 A) in his past 15 games, a marked improvement over 17 points in his first 59 career games. Maroons a big guy (6-foot-3, 229 pounds) who paid his dues in the minors, playing 353 AHL games, but hes also been more than merely a puncher, scoring 58 goals and 124 points in 139 games over the previous two AHL seasons. Its been a long road since he was drafted in the sixth round by Philadelphia in 2007, but hes starting to pay dividends for the Ducks. Take what you will from the data below and there is surely some debate over some of these players being on the bubble in terms of value, but when more and more tangible measures are available for players, it becomes increasingly difficult to justify a players spot in the lineup for intangible benefits. LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The line of Jeff Carter, Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson is putting up big numbers for the surging Los Angeles Kings.Carter, Toffoli and Pearson each scored and combined for 10 points in a 5-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday, helping the Kings complete a sweep of their six-game homestand. Altogether, they have 16 of the teams first 22 goals this season and have collected 17 assists. Our lines working pretty well right now, said Pearson, who scored twice in the third period. Were getting chances at the net and things are happening for us. Youve got to ride it when you can.The game was marred by a frightening injury to Columbus left wing Nick Foligno with 11:34 left in third period. Carter checked him along the boards in front of the Kings bench and Folignos head rammed into the elbow of linesman Shane Heyer, who had jumped on top of the dasher in an attempt to avoid both players.Foligno was put in a neck brace and wheeled off the ice on a stretcher after a long delay.Youre more concerned about your teammate and the person than you are about the game. The game obviously becomes secondary, coach Todd Richards said. My understanding is that hes alert, and hell be travelling back with us.Teammate Ryan Murray added: We know its serious when he does stay down, and we were all worried about him and praying for the beat. The Kings swept a homestand of at least six games for the first time in franchise history, according to STATS. In two of the wins, they were outshot 43-18 by St. Louis and 41-16 by Minnesota.Even before it began, we felt from a team perspective that we wanted to have a solid homestand and come away with more wins than losses, Pearson said. Now weve just got to keep it going.Dwight King also scored for the Kings, and Jonathan Quick made 22 saves. Quick, who broke Rogie Vachons club record with his 33rd shutout on Thursday in a 2-0 victory over Buffalo, has yielded just four goals on 169 shots over his last five starts — including a 1-0 shootout win against the Blues.Columbus goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who was looking for his 100th NHL victory, stopped 22 shots. Defenceman Tim Erixon scored his first NHL goal and Mark Letestu also scored for Columbus.Kings defenceman Robyn Regehr assisted on the go-ahead goal at 16:30 of the second period. His long slap shot hit traffic in front, but Carter set up Toffoli at the left of the net for his fourth goal. For a good part of the game we were competing, working hard and doing a lot of good things against the defending Stanley Cup champions, Richards said. First up on his list, after explicably giving himself the top spot, was the jovial Amir Johnson. Okay, no surprise there. Yall know Amir like we know him, said DeRozan. Hes funny as [expletive]. [If] you hang around with Amir all day, youre going to have the time of your life. He dont try to be that funny, but hes that funny. The next name he mentioned would raise a few eyebrows. Tyler Hansbrough. Hes another one thats funny as [expletive], DeRozan boasted, to our surprise. Hes a comedian. It dont seem like he is. Hes top three funniest dudes on the team, by far. Seriously. Trust me. A lot of people dont get to see his full personality, but Tyler is just… Tyler. Who is Tyler? After a full year spent in Toronto, hes still a bit of a mystery, at least to those who dont see him behind the closed doors of the locker room. On the floor, he brought his trademark energy and physicality, but often tried to do too much, searching for an identity and misinterpreting his role. Off it, he seemed quiet, introverted. Before and after games, he would mostly keep to himself. But there appears to be more to Hansbrough than meets the eye, evident in his mindful and reflective conversation with TSN.ca and The Globe and Mail on Thursday. The 28-year-old forward has been something of a revelation this fall, overlooked in a Raptors training camp filled with feel-good stories. In addition to extending his range beyond the three-point line, Hansbrough came back to work with a new, more easygoing mindset. It has not gone unnoticed in the gym. Theres just so many focus things that Tyler is doing now that are very noticeable to the coaching staff and I think its off the charts, said coach Dwane Casey, who has been raving about Hansbrough, a player quickly rising in his rotational hierarchy. Hes more comfortable, hes opened up a little bit, hes relaxed. Hes more familiar with what were doing. Hansbrough signed with the Raptors in the summer of 2013, expecting to play a prominent role off Caseys bench. He was logging nearly 20 minutes per game in November before an early-season trade welcomed Patrick Patterson and Chuck Hayes to Toronto, relegating Hansbrough to situational duty and mop-up minutes for the duration of the year. His role going into this season, the final on his contract, looked to be just as cloudy. For me personally, obviously, everyone wants to play, he said. So I think thats something that drove me to work as hard as I did in the off-season. The former Tar Heels star and the 2009 13th-overall pick says he put in more work this summer than ever before. Thanks in part to his experience on the bench last season and the advice of Torontos coaches, he was beginning to realize that his previously one-dimensional skill set - and reluctance to accept it - would eventually make him obsolete in an evolving NBA. So he vowed to evolve along with it. I think the league is getting smaller and smaller and teams like to be able to spread the court, he recognized. A lot of teams are having a big and four players around him just to be able to spread the floor. I think to be in the league, eventually all power forwards are going to have to be able to shoot. So, he enlisted the help of a shooting coach, reworked his mechanics and shot threes. A lot of them. Daily. He would focus primarily on launchinng them from the corners, understood to be one of the most efficient shots in basketball.dddddddddddd Im about as confident as you can be in the corner, he said. So yeah, definitely, if Im left open Ill definitely shoot it. Hansbrough, 0-for-12 from long distance in his first five seasons, made two of his four attempts during exhibition. More than being able to make them, Casey has credited him for knowing when to take them. His newfound restraint and acceptance of a complimentary role is the biggest reason hes back in the coachs good graces. I think a lot of it is he didnt understand last year, more so, Casey said. He felt like that was the way he could contribute. No fault to him, I think most new guys feel like they have to score to contribute but, I think hes figured out now - if I screen, if I rebound, if I defend, thats helping the team and thats going to help me get more time. Everybody wants to go and improve as a basketball player, but you have to know what you need to do to be on the court to help the team, said Hansbrough, who averaged 8.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in four seasons with the Pacers before coming to Toronto. So talking with the coaching staff, theres some things that we went over that I can improve on. Definitely my shot, but I spent more time on kind of studying and seeing the things I can do when Im on the court. In Wednesdays season opener, Hansbrough was the first player off Caseys bench, called upon early after Jonas Valanciunas picked up two quick fouls. Of Torontos reserves, only Patterson logged more than his 20 minutes. As promised, he proved that less is more. He attempted just two shots, making both and harnessed his effort on the defensive end, where whe battled All-Stars, Paul Millsap and Al Horford. While Patterson will likely be the first big off the pine on most nights, Hansbrough should continue to play a role, acting as the back-up centre in smaller lineups, assuming he maintains his recent progress. Thats all hes looking for - a chance to play, a chance to contribute to a winning team. Its taken some time to come to terms with the reality - hes not going to replicate the record-breaking numbers he put up at the collegiate level, not in the NBA. Instead, hes had to adapt. He was willing to do so this summer, more than ever. It was definitely changing some things up, but I think the big thing is really being open to change, he admitted. Not having a hard mind about doing things differently and accepting you need to improve on some things. Mentally, the adjustment has been more challenging than most players, certainly most people, could identify with. Hansbrough was a special player at North Carolina. A national champion, ACC Player of the Year, three-time consensus All-American. He often relied on brute force to make an impact in Indiana. Hes always been a physical player, sometimes to a downfall, he pointed out. His career hasnt exactly unfolded the way he might have expected it to, but he doesnt sound like a man with regrets. He probably wouldnt have imagined that hed be taking a step back in order to take a step forward heading into his sixth year in the lea
MILAN, Italy -- Juventus drew 1-1 at bitter rival Inter Milan in their first Serie A clash at an electric San Siro on Saturday, while Napoli moved atop of the table with a 2-0 home win over Atalanta. A dramatic finale at Torino saw AC Milan come from behind to draw 2-2 thanks to two very late goals, including another Mario Balotelli penalty. Mauro Icardi scored his first goal for Inter to put the hosts ahead in a fixture known as Italys derby. However, Arturo Vidal levelled almost instantly for Juventus -- as Inter conceded its first goal this season. "The match confirmed today that Inter can target the top of the table this season, and that Juventus is a team which is very tough to beat," Juventus coach Antonio Conte said after his 100th match in charge. "I saw my team play very well in a difficult stadium against a side that can compete in everything right to the end, seeing as they dont have European commitments. "What I liked best was the effort and desire to do well." Inter coach Walter Mazzarri was also pleased how his side reacted to the pressure. "I saw positive responses, which is a reason to be proud," Mazzari said. "Some of the lads felt the situation too much at the beginning, faced with the top team, in a full stadium ... "Are we a title-winning team? You only need two bad matches and everything changes. Its not time to make those judgments now." Inter took the lead in the 73rd when Ricky Alvarez robbed Giorgio Chiellini and burst forward before putting in a through ball for substitute Icardi to run onto and smash home -- sending most of the 83,000 crowd into a frenzy. Icardi scored three goals against Juventus for Sampdoria last season. However, Vidal levelled 80 seconds later, catching the Inter defence napping as he drilled Kwadwo Asamoahs cross into the bottom right corner. Juventus almost took the lead moments later but Carlos Tevez fired just past the right upright. In Naples, Napolis new signings were again on target to help the team maintain its 100 per cent record after three games. Gonzalo Higuain scored his second goal in as many games since his moved from Real Madrid, to give the home side a 71st-minute lead and Jose Callejon, who also joined from Madrid, scored his third goal for his new club 10 minutes later. Former Napoli midfielder Luca Cigarini was sent off in the 74th for a second booking for a bad tackle on Callejon. At Torino, all eyes were on Kaka in his first game for Milan since 2009 after returning from Real Madrid. The Brazilian wore the captains armband for part of his debut after Riccardo Montolivo was forced off injured. Milan appeared to be heading for its second defeat of the fledgling season after goals from Danilo DAmbrosio and Alessio Cerci before the game changed with a somewhat fortunate goal for the visitors three minutes from time. Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli punched the ball clear and Sulley Muntari scuffed his shot but the ball took a deflection and rolled into the bottom left corner. Torino thought the goal had been disallowed because Balotelli appeared to be offside and confusion reigned before it was awarded to much protest from the home players. Matters grew worse for Torino in stoppage time when Milan was awarded a penalty after Giovanni Pasquale tripped Andrea Poli. Balotelli, who has never missed a penalty in his career, stepped up to convert his 26th spot kick and snatch a point with the last kick of the game. "Four minutes from the end wed lost this, but the lads did well to believe," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "Torino played well, caused us a lot of problems and we left ourselves too open to their counterattacks. "We have changed some things in our system, so it takes time to rediscover our balance. At the moment we are too soft in defence -- by which I mean the whole team is not effective enough when defending. Its not good enough." Erik Gudbranson Jersey . But its also a smart game. A number of topics were broached, including the clubs use of platoons, the bright future of the starting rotation, Jose Reyes defence and Brett Lawries health issues. Listen to the interview here: Below is the transcript: TSN.ca: John, were here at Yankee Stadium. Three games left in this series and then a seven-game homestand before, presumably, the year is over. This has been, as you have said, a year of extremes, a lot of ups and downs. How would you describe everything thats happened over, what is it, 151 or 152 games? GIBBONS: A lot of ups and downs. Yeah, Scott, a lot of good things have happened this year and then weve hit some stretches where we havent played good enough. We have been a team of extremes. When were really playing good, were really good and then when we struggle, we can go from a good winning streak to losing streak. Its not necessarily unusual but its happened so often this year its kind of a mystery. But, like Ive said over and over, you play 162 games, the teams that get there deserve it. Theyre your best teams. Thats the bottom line. TSN.ca: And this team has struggled, at times mightily, especially through the month of August. Lets look ahead to the offseason, with apologies. I know youre not technically out of it, mathematically out of it, but lets look ahead to some of the questions that I think you guys will have to answer, starting with the rotation. Its about to get younger but I would think, John, when you look ahead, thats probably the most promising aspect of this group, the young pitching talent thats on the way or that has arrived and has performed so well so far. GIBBONS: Yeah, Scott, I couldnt agree with you more. Hutch has had a tremendous year for us, especially coming off of Tommy John. You look at Stroman since he came up from the minor leagues has been rock solid for us. You know Sanchez, we brought him up and put him in the pen but his future we think here is a starter. Hes done a tremendous job. Of course, youve got Buehrle and Dickey, a couple of old reliable guys. Other than that, I cant tell you which way the organization is going to go. You definitely need depth. Baseballs proven that. You look around baseball; its tough for your starting five to hold up throughout a course of a full season although weve done a pretty good job with the group were running through here right now, once they all came together. As far as the makeup of that, Im not sure. Everybody in baseball is going to be looking to add depth and upgrade in every area of the game. Its been a pretty good, solid group and theyve done their job. I think weve pitched better than our record indicates, especially in the last couple of months but theres games weve had trouble scoring runs. At this level of baseball, youve still got to pound the ball, too. TSN.ca: Are you too home run-reliant, offensively? GIBBONS: Maybe, yeah, maybe. I mean, home runs win. Theres no secret about it. You look at Baltimore, for a while there, we were leading baseball in home runs and a couple of our power threats went down and Baltimore kind of overtook that. Thats how theyre winning; with great defence, good solid pitching, great bullpen and they just flat out pound the ball. Certain guys, thats the type of hitter they are. Your sluggers, your big home run-RBI guys, generally they are your power hitters. They live and die with that but still you need a lot of pure hitters, complete hitters, guys that can spray the ball around, get on base. You need those guys to complement a team to get on base for those other guys and really lengthen an offence out. Weve had some pretty good ones here. You look at the year Navarros had this year. Hes done a tremendous job for us, offensively and defensively. Hes really a good hitter. Lindys had a tremendous year. Reyes, you take away his injury early on, hes been steady for us. Lets not forget Melky Cabrera. Hes probably the most steady guy weve had, beginning to end. Of course, hes not here now but weve had some real good years there. To go back and answer your question, you definitely need power. You need to drive in runs. You need to be able to strike quick. You need to build on leads to bury teams and you need to be able to hit the long ball when youre down to climb back into the game. But in saying that, you also need some guys in that lineup that are just consistent, pure hitters that get a lot of hits and they find their way on base. TSN.ca: Youve run a lot of platoons this year and especially earlier on, during the hot streak, it was working with Lawrie, Tolleson, Francisco and Brett playing two different positions depending on the opposing pitcher on any given night. Of late, youve been forced, through injury, to do that and it hasnt necessarily worked out as well as the team would have liked but you can only work with what you have. Have you been over-reliant on platoons compared to what you, in a perfect world, would you have been less reliant on mixing and matching night in and night out? GIBBONS: Well, I like platoons but you cant have too many of them. That almost puts you at a disadvantage. There are a lot of benefits from it. You get certain guys that hit, lets say left-handers that hit right-handers really well and vice versa but if you have too many of them, unless you get to the starting pitcher that night, it really opens you up and youre very vulnerable late in the game when games are turned over to bullpens. The other team knows if youve got two or three platoons running there, theyre just sitting there waiting until you decide to flip one and they can counter it. I mean, its real easy to do. Ideally, if you have one, maybe two max, you can be too reliant on it but where weve run into some trouble this year, in our platoons, lets say our right-handed hitters, theyve been really good against lefties but have had a tough time against the righties so if the opposing team makes the move, you go pinch-hit a right-hander for a left-hander and they bring the right-hander in, its almost so extreme the other way. Our guys struggle against the right-handers. If that was a little more balanced out, it wouldnt be such a big thing but its been to the extremes for all those guys. But the key is youve got to be able to get to the starter. Thats the goal, to beat the starter and put yourself in a position to go to your pen late. Yeah, ideally one, maybe max two, platoon-type situations. You start getting more than that, youre vulnerable. TSN.ca: Theres a two-fold question on Brett Lawrie. Lets deal with the health matter first and by the end of this season, a week and a bit away, hell have played in 302 of 486 games since the start of the 2012 season, his first big league season. Thats about a 62 per cent appearance rate. Can this organization go into the 2015 season counting on Brett Lawrie staying healthy? GIBBONS: Yeah, I think so and we have to. Bretts still a youngster but hes got a chance to be one of the better players in baseball. Weve all seen it. Weve seen it in glimpses but whats hurt him, like you said, is trouble staying on the field. He gets banged up. Part of it may be his style of play. He lets it hang out. The key, the guys that have the great long careers in baseball, they stay on the field. Brett, I think he can get over that. Hes had some tough luck, too. Hes a guy you can count on. We need to count on him because like I said, he can become one of the best players in the game. Hes got a good, short swing at the plate. Hes a line drive hitter with some power and it doesnt matter where you put him on the field defensively, whether its third or second, you can put him at other spots too and hes got a chance to be the best or one of the best at any spot you decide to put him on. He wins games with his glove. Theres no question when hes missing, the teams not as good.dddddddddddd Thats pretty obvious but weve got to find a way to keep him on the field. TSN.ca: The second part of that is does he need a positional home and if so, is that third base, could it be second base or is that dependent upon what moves Alex might be able to make in the offseason addressing one or both of those positions? GIBBONS: I think thats what it will come down to, where you feel best with the other guy or other guys; is it third base or second base because Bretts such a good third baseman, weve all seen but if you make him your second baseman, I think he could turn into the best or one of the best in baseball at that. Hes so athletic, hes got such a great arm, hes got great first-step quickness and defence is a mindset. Of course, youve got to have talent but youve got to have the mindset that youre going to make the plays and thats an important part of your game and things like that. Thats not the case with everybody in baseball. Everybody likes to hit. You know the old saying: they make their money off of swinging the bat. Thats just the reality of baseball. Another old saying thats been in baseball forever is glove guys, they fall from trees because theres a lot of guys who can play defence. Youre always looking for a little offence and rightfully so, I mean youve got to be able to hold your own up here with the bat. I think Bretts position will be determined by who fits one of the, the other one second or third. Either way you go, Bretts going to be an above average defender and theres a lot in that bat that hes got and hes just scratching the surface. TSN.ca: Do you, does Alex or does somebody in the organization need to have a conversation with Jose Reyes about possibly changing positions or are you satisfied with the shortstop that hes played this year? GIBBONS: Well, hes slowed down here at the end and I think his bodys beat up. Hes a base stealer. His whole career thats been his game; its a speed game so hes on the ground a lot, his body gets beat up. Hes still a young man by our standards but hes been beat up pretty good. His range has slowed down, definitely, as of late but I think a lot of that is hes worn down a little bit. He goes out there, he plays everyday and just the constant toll of this season and seasons past, it gets you late in the season like it does just about everybody else out there. TSN.ca: Colby Rasmus spoke to me the other day and expressed, I think, some frustration that he had not gotten much of an opportunity to start in the last three or four weeks and of course hes going into his first shot at free agency and hes concerned about his value and stuff like that. Can you explain the rationale for sending him to the bench and giving guys like Gose and Pillar and on this particular night, well see Dalton Pompey make his first career MLB start. GIBBONS: As I explained to Colby a couple of weeks ago, with Pillar and Gose, when they were up here earlier in the year, they played pretty damn good for us and we won a lot of games and we really wanted to get a sense of who they are. We have a better idea about Gose. I mean hes been up here more and theres not a better centrefielder in baseball than he is. He can steal you bases, a great base runner and all of those things. We think his bats going to come, at least enough to where he can be a good, solid player. Pillars a guy whos always hit in the minor leagues. Everywhere hes gone, his managers and coaches down there have all raved about his ability. It doesnt always look pretty but you know, he gets the results and when you look at his numbers, thats all he does. He hits and makes things happen so we really wanted to give him a good look and maybe answer some questions. The fact that both of them have been here this year and weve played pretty good baseball when they were out there, it wasnt like we were throwing somebody we didnt know anything about. Like you mentioned Pompey, were going to throw him out there tonight, give him some games, see what he looks like because hes come a long way in one year but hes had a tremendous year in the minor leagues. A switch-hitter, a very mature kid and he can really run. Well see how the defence goes but you watch him at the plate, he looks like hes got a real good idea at the plate. Hes real balanced from either side of the plate and hes been sitting on the bench here for us, the occasional pinch-running duty and then a couple of pinch-hits so well throw him out there give him some at-bats and maybe he can spark us because thats really what we need right now. Were having trouble scoring runs. Maybe hes just what we need. TSN.ca: Youve managed and coached at all levels. The obvious answer is the money so Im not going to let you off the hook with that. Other than that, whats the biggest difference as a manager that you have to deal with with players of this caliber, at this level versus the minor leagues? GIBBONS: Well you know, Scott, the stakes are so much higher up here. Youre here to win. This is the highest level of baseball. People pay a lot of money to come watch these guys play at the major league level. You go out there and you expect to win and you try to win. There are a lot of pressures with that involved from the players end of it, managers and coaches end of it, front office, I mean theres pressure to perform. Its that kind of business. Every team has a different type of make-up. As long as Ive been here, each team is always different. This team, youve got guys from all over the world, definitely different personalities. A managers job, youve got to deal with that and you try to hold it all together and see where it takes you at the end. I think the biggest thing, especially from the players viewpoint, its the pressures they deal with day in and day out, the anxieties, the ups and downs and the mood swings and things like that because its hard to play this game and youre at it everyday. Nobody should know that better than you since youre travelling with us everyday and you look a little worn out yourself. Thats the biggest thing, there are so many different personalities that come from all over the world. The thing about these jobs is we dont all have to like each other. I dont have to like them. They dont have to like me, this and that but we have to be able to function as a team. Its still got to be a team and its still got to be all about winning. Probably the managers biggest job is trying to hold everything together. For me, personally, Ive always viewed myself and I try to be fair to everybody and I try to communicate the best that I can. Its still a kids game but theres a lot at stake and youve still got to go out there and try to have fun. You play better when youre loose and relaxed and having fun, which can be awful tough when youre not winning but you still have to do that. Its still a great profession, good or bad. TSN.ca: As far as you know, youre back next year? GIBBONS: I have no idea. Im sure theyll let me know that at the end of the season. But you know, Scott, the rumblings always start at this time of year unless its been a greatly successful year, the rumblings always start. I dont get caught up in that, truthfully, because Ive always lived by the, whether as a player or growing up as a coach in the minor leagues, a manager, whatever it is
NEW YORK -- Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello will be sidelined for a while because of the fracture he sustained in his left hand while playing for Norway in the Sochi Olympics. "The overall is pretty exciting — for both the women and the men," said Thompson, who has 655 points compared to Smiths 650. "In the final, I was leading into the first turn and then Ophelie passed me and I got pushed into the powder and lost all my speed. Thats how she goes sometimes." Simmerling won her first heat Sunday and was second in her quarter- and semifinals to advance to the big final. "It was good today. I had to fight hard and it all came together," Simmerling said. "I messed up my timing on one of the features at the end of the start and I was fourth. Then Marielle (fell back) and the three of us just ended up 1-2-3. "Ive had a pretty consistent year, I would say. Theres one more race to go and Im hoping for a strong result again." Danie Sundquist, of Calgary was third in her first heat and finished 20th overall. Denied by the hosts in the first half, Messi withdrew into midfield to turn playmaker and place four precise passes behind the defence that led to an own goal in the 53rd minute and Tellos treble in the 60th, 81st and 86th. Levante had held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw at Ciutat de Valencia Stadium just four days earlier in the Spanish league, and it was on course toward a similar feat after Nabil El Zhar netted in the 31st. But Messi again showed that he is much more than Barcelonas all-time scorer with 331 goals since his debut in 2004 by exploiting Tellos speed down the left flank with well-timed assists. "Its spectacular to have a player like Messi on your side," said Tello. "All four goals came from his boots." Elsewhere, Real Sociedad defender Mikel Gonzalez scored twice to help earn a 3-1 victory at home over third-division Racing Santander in their opening leg. Levante found Barcelonas weak spot in defending set pieces when Carles Puyols clearance of a free kick fell for El Zhar to score at the second attempt after goalkeeper Jose Pinto had blocked his powerful first shot. Barcelona was more inspired after the break and Messis first pass to Tello led to the equalizer. Goalie Javier Jimenez got down to block Tellos shot, but Loukas Vyntra struck the loose ball off teammmate Juanfran Garcia and into the net.dddddddddddd Messi again floated back to the centre of the pitch to draw the defence with him before threading another pass to meet Tellos run, and this time the forward fired the ball beyond Jimenez to give Barcelona the lead. The Argentina star fended off a tackle and slid a diagonal ball for Tello to score his second before Messi picked him out with a pass over the top for his third goal. "Our first half worried me, but we have players that dont need 45 minutes to turn the match around," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. "(Messi) can change this and any other game. He can undo any type of defence. The tiredness of our rivals played its part and the spaces opened up as they wore down. Leo took great advantage of them." Puyol had to be replaced by Javier Mascherano in the 57th due to an apparent leg injury. The 35-year-old Puyol has been plagued by a series of injuries for the past two seasons. Martino, however, said that Puyols injury was "only a leg knock." Sociedad forward Gonzalo "Chory" Castro crossed twice for Gonzalez to score his goals, the first coming in the third minute followed by another in the 34th — just two minutes after Racings Andreu Guerao had hit the crossbar. NEWARK, N.J. - The New Jersey Devils signed defenceman Andy Greene to a long-term contract extension Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed The 31-year-old Greene, who has spent his entire eight-year NHL career with the Devils, had one year remaining on his current contract at $3.5 million. "No question, it was important for us to have Andy with us long term," said Lou Lamoriello, the Devils president and general manager. "Everyone knows how much Andy means to our organization. Hes our top defender. He carries the most time on the ice. Hes on the ice for power play, penalty killing. We have to find ways to get him off the ice. Thats how important he is. And hes a quiet leader, the way he handles the young defencemen. Hes a pure Devil. Were the only team hes been with." Lamoriello and Greene wanted to get a new deal done before Greene reached free agency. "It never really entered my mind," Greene said. "I had one year left. After the season, Lou and I sat down and this is exactly what I wanted. I came in as a Devil and Im fortunate to continue my career as a Devil." Greene played in all 82 regular-season games last season, scoring a career-high eight goals and adding 24 assists as the Devils missed the playoff. He has 28 goals and 121 assists in his NHL career. What are the New York Rangers likely to do with impending free agents Dan Girardi and captain Ryan Callahan? Will Dan Boyle be extended like San Jose Sharks teammates Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton? Dreger: Theyre gauging interest in Ryan Callahan and I know thats going to be a big surprise to Rangers fans out there. Theres been much speculation because of the significance of the signing of those two players, but Im told that Rangers general manager Glen Sather has reached out to a number of general managers and he is gauging trade interest on Callahan, less so on Girardi. I know theres a lot of interest in Girardi, but the sense is that the Rangers are more comfortable or, at least, more confident that theyll get Girardi signed. Bob McKenzie: Its my understanding that if the Rangers do not sign Callahan and/or Girardi by the trade deadline, they are determined to trade one or both of them, whichever guy is not signed. Even though theyre very much in the playoff picture, they realize theyre not a Cup contender and theyre not going to let one or both of these guys walk in the summer for absolutely nothing. The other aspect thats interesting with negotiations is that Girardi and Callahan are both looking for long-term deals. Girardi is going to be 30 years old in the summer and hes looking for a seven-year deal with Jay Bouwmeester-type money, up around $5.4 million per season. As for Callahan, the captain of the Rangers, he wants a seven-year deal believed to be at more than $6 million a year. These guys will get that in unrestricted free agency, so the term is a concern for the New York Rangers. LeBrun: Term and age are pretty much what theyre talking about in San Jose with Dan Boyle. It didnt go unnoticed that when Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton - who are 34 - signed their extensions last Friday, Boyle remained unsigned. Hes 37 and hes in that 35-and-over club that, if he signs a long-term deal, it counts against the cap, regardless. So the Sharks would rather do a one-year deal, but I think Boyle wants a two-year deal. Keep an eye on where that one goes. Is there a market for Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller? McKenzie: Its not a hot market and its not a cold market. Its lukewarm at best. There is some interest in Ryan Miller. The Minnessota Wild havent made an offer, but theyre waiting to see what happens with Josh Hardings health situation.dddddddddddd The St. Louis Blues might have some lukewarm interest. Right now, as far as Ryan Miller goes, I wouldnt say its frontburner, but theyre trying to trade him. Are we going to see some kind of mini-trade deadline prior to the freeze on February 7? LeBrun: Whats happened this week is that Ive had teams tell me that the bubble teams have started to send their lists out and say "If we pull the plug right before the Olympic break, here is the list of players that were willing to move," so keep that in mind. But those bubble teams are also using these next 10 days to determine their performance and see if theyre still in it and if theyre buyers or sellers, so those two days right before the break could be interesting. If Lightning superstar Steven Stamkos cant go to Sochi, who might step in for Team Canada? Darren Dreger: Its a relatively short list. There are at least two, maybe three players…four or five, if you really want to scratch beneath the surface and try to find a true replacement, if necessary, for Steven Stamkos. Youre looking at names like Claude Giroux or, perhaps, James Neal of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The primary reason for that is because you need that sniper-type quality that Steven Stamkos possesses, so in those two players, you definitely get that, but I wouldnt be at all surprised to see Jeff Carter elevate up the line-up and he start on the wing with Sidney Crosby, as well, as a good replacement, if not, a second option for Babcock and the coaching staff. Pierre LeBrun: You cant discount the possibility of Martin St. Louis, given the month that hes had, and also, Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes. The reality is, Team Canada had a call last week and went over all of their injury replacements. They have a pretty good idea, but they havent made official whod be that one guy if Stamkos cant play because, right now, they think he is that guy. With six outdoor games this
DETROIT -- Jeff Bower is returning to the NBA, this time to join the front office of the Detroit Pistons. Detroit announced Tuesday that Bower had been hired as the teams new general manager, part of an off-season overhaul in which Stan Van Gundy was hired last month as the coach and team president. Bower was the coach at Marist College last season, but he resigned that position Monday. "Im excited to join the Pistons organization and play a role in helping this franchise build on its great basketball tradition," Bower said in a statement. "I look forward to working with Stan, his staff and everyone in the Pistons organization to put together a team that the community can support and be proud of. Im also excited about ownerships commitment to winning and their demonstrated commitment to the community." The Pistons called a news conference for Wednesday to introduce Bower. Bower has been a general manager and coach in the NBA, holding both those positions with the New Orleans Hornets in 2009-10. "Jeff brings great basketball knowledge and NBA experience to our organization and hes enjoyed success in building teams," Van Gundy said. "Hes a great evaluator of talent and Jeff will bring solid leadership to our front office." Bower was the general manager of the Hornets from 2001-03 and again from 2005-10. Marist went 12-19 this past season under Bower, which was a two-game improvement from 2012-13. "I have a lot of respect for Jeff and the job he did in his time at Marist," athletic director Tim Murray said. "He laid the foundation for the program moving forward and I feel that this is a great opportunity for our next head coach. I wish Jeff the best of luck as he leaves Marist for a very specific and compelling NBA opportunity." The Pistons went 29-53 last season, missing the playoffs for a fifth straight year. That was the end of Joe Dumars tenure as team president. Van Gundys coaching is well respected -- he went 371-208 in seven-plus seasons with Miami and Orlando -- but now hell have the added responsibility of handling personnel matters. Its rare for one person to have that much control in the NBA, so Bower may play an important role in shaping the franchises future. Wes Martin Jersey . Much of Mondays discussion focused on Bostons lineup considerations as the series progresses, specifically when the venue shifts to St.MELBOURNE, Australia - At an Australian Open marked by upsets and new story lines, Rafael Nadal will play Sundays final against a man often called the "other" Swiss tennis player. Now, after a stunning run in Melbourne, Stanislas Wawrinka has a new nickname: The Stanimal — a tribute to his gritty, fight-until-the end style of tennis. Fittingly, perhaps, the name was apparently coined by none other than Roger Federer, in a tweet of support for his friend which quickly caught on earlier in the tournament. Now that Federer is out of the running — he lost to Nadal in the semifinals — the 17-time Grand Slam winner and long-time ambassador for Swiss tennis has joined those cheering for Wawrinka to win his first Grand Slam final. It is a match that holds historical significance for all three players. If the No. 1-ranked Nadal wins, as the odds suggest he will, the 27-year-old Spaniard will become the first player to win each of the majors twice in the Open era. It would be his 14th Grand Slam trophy and bring him one step closer to Federers all-time record of 17. If No. 8-ranked Wawrinka beats Nadal to win his first major title, he catapults to a career high of No. 3 in the rankings. Just reaching the final assures Wawrinka of the No. 5 spot, meaning for the first time he will pass Federer, who is now ranked sixth. On the eve of the final, Wawrinka said he was still shocked by his success. "Its insane. Its incredible," the 28-year-old Wawrinka said Saturday, speaking to reporters in English and in his native French. "I never imagined that one day I would be here, playing in the final." After a breakthrough year in 2013, Wawrinka is playing the best tennis of his life in Melbourne. He knocked out three-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic inn the quarterfinals and beat No.dddddddddddd 7 Tomas Berdych in the semifinals. He knows how tough it will be to beat Nadal — hes tried and failed 12 times. "Ive played him so many times, and lost so many times, but Im going to try again," Wawrinka said. "I know what I have to do. I know that I have to play aggressive, serve really well, and try to always push him." "Im playing my best tennis here," Wawrinka added. "Physically, Im ready.". Nadal says hes ready, too, for a breakthrough at what he calls his unluckiest Grand Slam. Nadal won in Melbourne in 2009 but in subsequent years struggled with injuries during or before the seasons first major. He missed the 2013 Australian Open during a seven-month layoff for illness and a knee injury. He returned to win the French and U.S. Open last year but reaching the final in Melbourne holds special significance. "After missing last year for me its really, really emotional to be back on this court, Rod Laver Arena, and to be able to play another final," said Nadal, who has known Wawrinka since they were teens, playing junior tournaments in Europe. DETROIT -- Albert Pujols doubled, and the next three batters hit singles. Then there were a couple walks, some poor Detroit fielding -- and by the time the inning ended, the Los Angeles Angels had scored eight runs. "All I could do was clap and high-five," said C.J. Wilson (7-5) allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings, and the Angels took advantage of six Detroit errors on a rainy night. "It was just an ugly night for us. Obviously, they hit the ball all over the place and we didnt make some plays," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We actually swung the bats halfway decent, but we just played an ugly game. We pitched and played an ugly game." Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the third for the Tigers, but he also made two errors. Rick Porcello (4-5) gave up seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings. The Angels scored nine runs off him in two-thirds of an inning in April. This start looked better at first, but Los Angeles broke through in a big way in the fifth. The game was tied at 2 when Pujols hit a one-out double in the fifth. Mark Trumbo followed with a single, and Howie Kendricks single gave the Angels the lead. They werent done. Josh Hamiltons single brought home another run -- Torii Hunters throw might have been in time, but catcher Bryan Holaday couldnt handle it on the bounce -- and with runners on second and third, Alberto Callaspo was intentionally walked. Darin Downs relieved Porcello and allowed all three inherited runners to score. He walked Hank Conger to force in a run, and Erick Aybars sacrifice fly made it 6-2. Shuck followed with an RBI single, and a single by Mike Trout brought home another run. Pujols RBI single made it 9-2 and chased Downs. Evan Reed came on and immediately made a wild pickoff throw to first for an error, allowing one more run to come home. The Angels snapped a three-game losing streak with their highest-scoring game of the season. It was also the most runs allowed by the Tigers. Los Angeles is still 10 games out of first place in the AL West. "We need to do everything right to get to where we need to get -- to be in the race," Wilson said. "We need to get lucky. Were so far back right now, its not even scoreboard watching. We have to really pull together and get the most out of ourselves." Hamilton had three hits after entering the night in an 0-for-15 slump. He also scored three runs. Cabrera beat out Trout last year for AL MVP, and each star made his presence felt in the third. Trout drove in the games first run with a single, and Cabrera answered with an opposite-field homer, his 21st. Wilson threw seven scoreless innings in his previous start. He wasnt as sharp Tuesday, allowing three runs in the fifth immediately after his teammates had given him a 10-2 lead. Shuck made it 11-5 with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, scoring Aybar, who had walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Holaday. Los Angeles tacked on three more runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Aybar and a two-run single by Shuck. Cabrera made both his errors that inning. It was the first time all season a team has made more than four errors. Detroit remains 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place Cleveland in the AL Central. It was raining for much of the second half of the game, and hardly any fans were left at the end. The game took 4 hours, 3 minutes. Although the outcome wasnt in much doubt, the Angels still struggled to get the final few outs. Ramon Santiago, who was hitting .163 and had entered as a replacement for Cabrera, drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth to make it 14-7. A streak of lightning was visible in the distance when Hamilton caught Don Kellys sacrifice fly for the second out, and Victor Martinez grounded out to end it. "It maybe took a little bit longer, but we did what we had to," Shuck said. "It was kind of cool -- some pretty cool lightning in the background to watch." With the NHL Draft coming up on June 27 and free agency opening on July 1, discussions between NHL general managers are already heating up towards a busy off-season. Each day, TSN.ca provides the latest rumours, reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. Plenty Of Interest in No. 1 According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, at least eight teams have shown interest in acquiring the first pick overall pick from the Florida Panthers. The list of teams includes the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs. Dreger also reports the Panthers plan on naming their new head coach by Monday at the latest. Also on the coaching front, some believe Willie Desjardins may have a choice between head coaching jobs in Pittsburgh and Vancouver but no final decisions have been made yet. Pivotal Times In Vancouver Ben Kuzma of The Vancouver Province writes that Ryan Keslers trade value appears to be more appealing for a team like the Anaheim Ducks than that of Jason Spezza. Not only does Kesler have two years left at $5 million a season and Spezza one year at $4 million, the Ducks will need the grit and defensive game that Kesler would bring to the tough Pacific Division. Kuzma adds that Kesler also led the Canucks with 25 goals, while Spezza had 23 goals in a "softer conference." Kuzma also writes that if the Senators are asking for a top-six forward, a top prospect and a first-round pick for Spezza, then Canucks GM Jim Benning can at least ask that much for Kesler. He thens writes that the St. Louis Blues may interest Spezza because they would need help on their power play (worst during the postseason) and have assets that would interest the Senators. Kuzma adds that the Canucks wont get a Kesler-comparable in return in any trade scenario, but Benning could get a first-round pick and can offer up a centre and young wingers to help rebuild the Canucks. And if that happens before the draft, Kuzma specualtes that Vancouvers sixth overall pick can be in play to acquire Floridas first overall pick. Thats News To Tallon Miami Herald writer George Richards tweeted that Panthers GM Dale Tallon is refuting a report that defenceman Brian Campbell has asked for a trade. St. Louiss Big 550 KTRS host and CBS Sports Radio St. Louis contributor Andy Strickland reported Wednesday that Campbell - who still has two years left on his contract that pays him over $7 million a season - wants out of Florida. WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State John Kerry, the most powerful politician in the house, performed a ceremonial puck drop to send the Olympians on their way. Alex Ovechkin, the biggest hockey star in the arena, scored his league-leading 40th goal to give his team the lead in the third period. Set aside those two larger-than-life names for a moment, however, and look at the trio who occupy the score sheet for the crucial tying goal early in the third period of the Washington Capitals 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night. Patrick Wey (second NHL game). Julien Brouillette (first NHL game). Tom Wilson (second NHL goal). "It was a simple play, but it was nice that we ended up scoring," Wey said. "And Im really excited." Simple but effective. Wey passed cross-ice to Brouillette, who then deliberately shot wide of the net to set up a carom off the boards that eventually made its way to Wilson. "The play Brou made, banking it off the boards like that, I thought that was a great play," Washington coach Adam Oates said. "And obviously it worked, the bounce was right. ... It gave us a lot of life." Wey and Brouillette had arrived in town the night before, having been recalled from Hershey of the AHL to serve as the third defensive pairing because the Capitals had run out of healthy bodies. "From what I expected," Oates said, "they were fantastic." The Wey-Brouillette-Wilson goal made the score 2-2, setting the stage for Ovechkin. The Russian forward lifted the puck over a pile of bodies in the crease with 12:14 remaining, following up after Nicklas Backstrom had taken two whacks at a rebound before sliding into goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. Troy Brouwer then added his second goal of the game in the closing minutes, and Braden Holtby made 34 saves for the Capitals, who are trying to generate at least a modicum of momentum headed into the Olympic break. Washington had dropped 10 of its previous 13, including a 1-0 shutout loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday. Bryan Little and Dustin Byfuglien scored, and Pavelec stopped 26 shots for the Jets, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Winnipeg dominated play in the second period before allowing three goals in the third, dropping the team to 9-3 since coach Claude Noel was fired on Jan. 12 and replaced by Paul Maurice. "I think they just did a little bit to us what weve been doing to (other) teams," Maurice said. "They weathered that second-period storm." With the NHLs Olympic break beginning after Saturdays games, Kerry was on hand to recognize the four players from each team headed to Sochi. He then dropped the puck at centre ice between two U.S. Olympians, Winnipegs Blake Wheeler and Washingtons John Carlson. Kerry also met with Capitals coaches and players in the locker room before the game. "I had a good talk with him," Oates said. "But hes obviously a very busy man. He comes with his entourage; its pretty tough to have a chat." NOTES: Littles goal was actually put into the net by Washingtons Martin Erat, something the Czech forward has yet to do for his own team this season. Cheap Saints Jerseys .J. -- Freshman Eli Carter scored a career-high 31 points and hit the go-ahead basket in the second overtime as Rutgers rallied to stun No. CLEVELAND -- Justin Verlander showed signs of his old form. However, the Detroit Tigers still needed someone to bail them out Saturday night. Two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera was the right man for the job. Cabrera doubled with one out in the 10th inning to drive in the go-ahead run and lift the Tigers to a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians. Verlander was one out away from winning for the only the second time in seven starts, but closer Joe Nathan (4-2) blew a save for the fifth time this season when Michael Bourns two-out single tied the score. "Nobody said this game was easy," Verlander said. Ian Kinsler opened the 10th with a single off Cody Allen (3-2). Following a sacrifice, Cabrera hit Allens second pitch off the wall in left-centre, scoring Kinsler. Indians manager Terry Francona was faced with a tough decision -- pitch to Cabrera or walk him intentionally and go after Victor Martinez, who homered in the second and had an RBI single in the sixth. "Sometimes you have to choose which one you are going to pitch to," Francona said. "Youd rather not face both of them, but sometimes youve got to. Sometimes youve just got to get them out." Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was happy he didnt have to make that choice. "I knew they couldnt walk both of them so I felt good taking my shot," he said. Phil Coke pitched the 10th for his first save. Verlander allowed two runs in seven innings, and Rajai Davis and Kinsler homered in the sixth, giving Detroit a 4-2 lead. The Indians scored in the eighth, but Nathan laboured in the ninth, throwing 32 pitches in the ninth. He struck out the first two hitters, but singles by David Murphy and Yan Gomes put runners at first and third. Bourn slapped a single through the left side to tie it. Verlander rebounded from a stretch where he had lost five of six decisions, including three straight starts. The former AL MVP and Cy Young winner, held the Indians to four hits and struck out eight. Verlander, who was 2-5 with a 7.83 ERA in his last seven starts going into the game, gave up a solo homer to Carlos Santana in the fourth and allowed an unearned run in the second. "This last month has been pretty frustrating, but I saw some swings that were different out there," Verlander said. Francona wassnt fooled by Verlanders recent numbers.dddddddddddd "I know he looks human, which I guess we all are, but you see his name and you dont run to the ballpark thinking youre going to get healthy," Francona said. "His stuff is still really good." Davis broke a 2-all tie with a one-out blast into the home-run porch in left field. Kinsler, whose fielding error in the second cost Verlander a run, followed with a homer into the bleachers in left-centre. Both came off Trevor Bauer, who allowed four runs in 6 1-3 innings. The Tigers are 12-20 since May 18, but have won three straight for the first time in a month. Detroit leads Kansas City by 1 1/2 games in the AL Central. Verlander had allowed 38 earned runs in 43 2-3 innings in his previous seven starts. He lost all three starts in June, when he was rocked for 19 earned runs in 18 2-3 innings. "He was definitely good, but ironing out mechanics does not happen overnight," Ausmus said. "I wanted him to leave on a good note and feel good about his start." The Indians recorded their second sellout of the season, thanks mostly to Omar Vizquel being inducted into the teams Hall of Fame in a pregame ceremony. Vizquel, who played for the Indians from 1994-04, is Detroits first base and infield coach. The Tigers winning streak is their longest since they won six straight May 12-18. Brantley, who returned after being sidelined with a concussion Monday, was 0 for 5 to end his nine-game hitting streak. J.D. Martinez singled in the second, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, in which hes batting .429. NOTES: Tigers LHP Ian Krol, who has a 15.75 ERA over his last five appearances, was on the 15-day disabled list with a sore shoulder. He allowed two home runs un the eighth inning Friday and admitted he is "kind of going through a dead-arm period." LHP Pat McCoy, pitching at Triple-A Toledo, was recalled. ... DUNEDIN, Fla. - Manager John Gibbons offered a glimpse Sunday of the Blue Jays much-debated pitching rotation. He helped fill in some of the gaps when he said the pitching questions remaining are who will be the fifth starter and whether the team will carry seven or eight in the bullpen. Previously GM Alex Anthopoulos had talked of two openings left to fill in a starting rotation that already features R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Brandon Morrow. A gaggle of pitchers has been competing for the fourth and fifth sports with J.A. Happ, Drew Hutchison and Ricky Romero the leading contenders although Happs back issues had muddied the waters somewhat. Asked Sunday if Happ was the fourth starter with one position still open, Gibbons replied: "Yeah, Im a big Happ fan. I think hes going to have a heck of a year for us and all indications the other day are his backs fine. He threw very well (in a minor league game Friday). That was a big question. "Now if his back flares up, that might be a different story." Hutchison is widely believed to have already pitched his way into the rotation. In three outings this spring, the 23-year-old right-hander has given up three runs in 9 2-3 innings for an ERA of 2.79. He has struck out 16 and walked one. "Hes been pitching great," Gibbons acknowledged. "Arguably the best of anybody in camp." Then he clammed up, returning to his stock response that the lineup will be announced at the end of the spring. "So keep asking. You aint getting nothing," he said devilishly. Gibbons confirmed Dickey will pitch first with left-hander Buehrle third in the rotation. Morrow reportedly will throw fifth, which would put him on the mound for the home opener April 4 against the Yankees. The Jays open March 31 with a four-game series in Tampa. The manager declined comment on Morrow pitching fifth. But he rejected the suggestion that a veteran was needed to handle the pressure of pitching the home opener. "Its a big day but, you know what, if you dont think they can handle that day they probably shouldnt be there." Gibbons also said he had no issue with southpaws Buehrle and Happ pitching back-to-back. "Theyre both left-handers but theyre different type of pitchers," he said. In case a second opinion on the starting rotation is needed, the Jays asked fans via Twitter on Sunday to offer their suggestions. "Who do you think should be included in the @BlueJays Opening Day Pitching Rotation? Send us your 5 pitchers and rank them 1-5," the team tweeted Sunday on its official account. Gibbons confirmed locks in the bullpen are Casey Janssen, Sergio Santos, Brett Cecil, Aaron Loup and Steve Delabar. "Theyre not going anywhere," Gibbons said. "Your other guys will be your middle and long (relief) guys so were covered with our late-inning go-to guys." Pitchers Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond, Jeremy Jeffress and Dustin McGowan are out of options, meaning the team could lose them if they are sent down. McGowan is expected to be part of the opening bullpen, despite his desire to be a starter. "Theres some pretty good pitchers out there that are out of options and you cant keep them all," said Gibbons. "We also think the guys we cut loose will probably get grabbed," he added. A seven-man bullpen would give the Jays a four-man bench. "Thats the risk you take. If you take that extra bullpen guy, youre shorter on the bench." said Gibbons. "Thats not ideal but it might cover our rotation a little bit, make the pitching staff that much stronger if we go with eight." Despite the options complication, Gibbons insisted the team would take the best 25 players north. Also Sunday, the Jays optioned pitchers Kyle Drabek, Chad Jenkins and Sean Nolin to triple-A Buffalo. Reliever Neil Wagner was sent down Friday. Cheap Bengals Jerseys China . - The Clippers have signed guard Dahntay Jones to a second 10-day contract. The first NBA game in South America now will be missing its biggest star. DETROIT -- The Toronto Blue Jays can win an occasional pitching duel, too -- or at least hold their own until Brett Lawrie and the rest of their sluggers finally break through. In a game that was scoreless until the ninth inning, Lawries three-run homer highlighted a big burst for the Blue Jays, who then held on for a 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Drew Hutchison pitched seven scoreless innings for Toronto, which now has the second-best record in the American League but still faces questions about the sturdiness of its starting rotation. "He looks like a veteran out there," Lawrie said. "Hes throwing the ball very well for us. Hes keeping us in ballgames." The Blue Jays have a team ERA of 4.07, and aside from Mark Buehrle, their pitching has been shaky. But Hutchison was sharp against Detroit, allowing three hits without a walk and striking out seven. If Toronto can pitch like that, Lawrie, Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and the rest of the lineup should be able to provide enough offence. "I didnt really get going and get into a good rhythm until probably about the fourth or the fifth," Hutchison said. "Obviously, I believe Im a good pitcher, and Im capable of doing that every night, and thats what I expect out of myself." Anibal Sanchez matched Hutchison with seven scoreless innings, but both bullpens came unglued in the ninth. The Blue Jays broke loose against Joe Nathan (2-2) to win this matchup of the AL East and AL Central leaders. In his first season with the Tigers, Nathans ERA is now an unsightly 6.86 after he was charged with four runs Tuesday. "Im at a loss for words. I thought I threw pretty well," Nathan said. "Ive got to be better. A lot of bad luck out there, too. But the biggest thing is another loss for the team." The 39-year-old right-hander walked Anthony Gose to start the ninth -- Torontos first baserunner ssince the fourth inning.dddddddddddd Gose stole second and went to third on a single by Jose Reyes. After a popup by Melky Cabrera gave the Tigers hope of escaping the jam, Bautista put the Blue Jays ahead with an RBI single up the middle. Bautistas grounder slipped between shortstop Andrew Romine and second baseman Ian Kinsler. Romine appeared to shy away at the last second, as if Kinslers presence distracted him, but it wasnt clear if the ball was hit hard enough for an inning-ending double play anyway. "Im not sure if Romine thought Ian was going to get to the ball or Ian thought Romine would get the ball," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. "I thought it was going to be a double play ball at the time, but it was more in the middle than I could tell from my angle." Nathan nearly picked Reyes off third, but the safe call was upheld after a replay review. After Encarnacion walked to load the bases, pinch-hitter Kevin Pillar hit a sacrifice fly off Ian Krol for the games second run. Lawrie then went deep off Al Alburquerque for his ninth homer of the year. J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth for the Tigers. Casey Janssen came on and struck out Don Kelly for his ninth save in 10 chances. Dustin McGowan (3-2) worked the eighth for the win. The Tigers avoided a second straight shutout, but Detroit has lost three straight. Sanchez allowed two hits with five strikeouts and no walks. NOTES: Detroits Austin Jackson was given an error on a flyball by Texas Mitch Moreland from a May 24 game after an official scoring change. The play was originally ruled a double. ... Madrid endured plenty of pressure in the first leg match, but scored from a 19th-minute counter-attack. Cristiano Ronaldo found Fabio Coentrao speeding down the left flank and Benzema steered his low cross past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Ronaldo returned from a left leg injury but missed a number of scoring opportunities before eventually giving way to Gareth Bale, who had started on the bench after battling with flu. Bayern pressed for an equalizer in the closing stages, forcing Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas to deny Mario Goetze in the 84th minute while fellow substitute Thomas Mueller had no better luck with his late effort from inside the area. But Madrid should have extended its lead ahead of Tuesdays return leg in Germany, as the team bids to end a three-season semifinal losing streak and reach the final for the first time since winning in 2002. "If you want to do damage, you have to go for the victory -- because 1-0 is not definitive," Madrid defender Sergio Ramos said as he looked ahead to a tough second leg match. "But its a good result to take to Munich." Atletico Madrid or Chelsea await in the May 24 final in Lisbon, with the pair playing to a scoreless draw in their first-leg match on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola endured his first loss at the Bernabeu as coach after seven previous visits with Barcelona, and at times the encounter took on the appearance of a "clasico" with Madrid looking to capitalize on the break while the visitors controlled play. "Madrid thrives off the counter attack, Madrid is the best team in the world on the counter," Guardiola said. "They get back as fast as they go forward, theyre athletes." Madrids defence did well to contain Bayern in its area and then break quickly, but the Spanish club squandered its other chances after Benzema broke the ddeadlock.dddddddddddd. Madrid dug in and did well to clear many of Bayerns best opportunities as it controlled three-quarters of possession in the first half. The German champions found space between the lines and combined some swift passing movements, with Franck Ribery picking out Arjen Robben inside the area in the 39th. But Madrid weathered each buildup before surging forward, with Angel Di Maria gathering a loose ball at the right post only to wildly shoot over Neuer before halftime. After the break, Neuer had to dive low to keep out Ronaldos angled shot after a Bayern defensive mix-up. Ronaldo forced Neuer into another low save before giving way to Bale, who energized Madrids attack with his pace. The Welshman was playing for the first time since his stunning winner in Madrids 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final. "Its been 20 days Cristiano hasnt been 100 per cent, so it was a sacrifice for him. It couldnt have been easy for Cristiano tonight," said Ancelotti, who remained unbeaten against Bayern with his fifth win in seven meetings. "But Cristiano and Bale will be 100 per cent" for the return, the Italian coach added. Guardiola brought on Mueller and Goetze for the final quarter and Mueller nearly equalized with a rising shot in the 81st. A chance then fell to Goetze in the Madrid area but Casillas reacted well to stop the Germans powerful volley. "They had chances to score more goals, definitely," said Guardiola. "We probably should have created a few more scoring chances. (But) they have a very good defence." Bayern had gone 29 matches without scoring coming into the 20th meeting between the storied European rivals, and will still rate its chances of reaching a third straight final with the return leg at home. New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Two of the three players deemed the NFCs best during Week 5 of the NFL season -- Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson and Niners kicker Phil Dawson, represent the NFC West. Joining Wilson and Dawson on the list is Green Bay Packers linebacker Julius Peppers as the top trio recognized for last weekends performances. Wilson fueled his clubs 27-17 win over the Washington Redskins on Monday night by completing 18-of-24 attempts for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns while adding 122 yards rushing. The Wisconsin product became the first player to amass at least 200 yards passing and 100 on the ground in the history of Monday Night Football. Dawson accounted for 16 total points (five field goals, one extra point) in San Franciscos 22-17 victory over Kansas City last Sunday. He became the first 49ers kicker to finish a game at least 5-for-5 on field-goal tries since Jeff Wilkins on Sept. 29, 1996 against Atlanta. Peppers, who is the only player in league history to accumulate at least 100 sacks with at least 10 interceptions, racked up three tackles, a half-sack and returned a pick 49 yards for a touchdown in the Packers 42-10 demolition of Minnesota this past Thursday. Youth Equanimeous St. Brown Jersey .com) - Real Madrid claimed its 16th consecutive victory across all competitions on Saturday after earning a 2-1 win over Malaga at the Estadio La Rosaleda.HOUSTON -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny tinkered with his lineup on Tuesday night, moving Matt Holliday from the No. 3 spot to fifth in the order for the first time this season. He isnt sure how long hell stay with this configuration, but after the night Allen Craig had, Matheny certainly has no plans to move him out of the fourth spot. Craig homered and tied a career-high with four hits and had three RBIs, and Carlos Beltran and David Freese both added a homer as the Cardinals got back on track by rolling to a 13-5 win over the Houston Astros. "Thats hard to mess with when Allen has the protection that he has," Matheny said. "Those other guys are getting on base in front of him and hes doing a great job of driving them in. Its not what I want to fool around with too much." Craig was glad to hear that, but said he isnt too concerned about those things. "I definitely like hitting fourth, but weve got so many good hitters on this team, and I dont really have the privilege to care about where Im hitting," he said. The Cardinals managed just seven runs combined in a three-game sweep by the Texas Rangers, the first time they were swept this season. On Tuesday, they piled up the same number of runs in the fourth inning alone, powered by a three-run triple by Matt Carpenter. But Matheny said he wasnt bothered by the rough weekend because of the consistency his offence has shown all season. "Youre going to have tough weekends because there are good teams out there and very good pitchers and sometimes its just hard to pull it off," he said. "Our guys went out and kind of did the same thing that they usually do." Jake Westbrook (4-2) didnt allow a hit until the sixth inning and yielded four hits and four runs in six innings in his third start since coming off the disabled list. "As well as I was pitching it was a little disappointing," Westbrook said of his difficult sixth inning. "In my eyes I felt like I should have pitched a little bit better in that inning. But the offence was great tonight and really picked me up and picked us up as a team, so that was good to see." Matt Dominguez got Houstons first hit of the game on a towering home run to left field. Brett Wallace added a two-run triple in that inning in his first game back from Triple-A. Houston starter Lucas Harrell (5-8) entered the game with a 1.73 ERA in four starts this month, but things went wrong quickly. He allowed seven hits and seven runs with four walks in 3 1-3 innings. "I left the ball up, and when you leave the ball up against a team that hits theyre going to hit," Harrell said. Craig extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single to start the second before Matt Holliday ended a 0 for 11 slump with a single. Adams grounded into a double play before Harrell walked Freese. He escaped the jam when Jon Jay grounded into a force out to end the inning. Harrell struck out the side in the third before trouble began in the fourth. Beltran opened the fourth with a double and scored on a single by Craig to make it 1-0. Holliday and Matt&nbssp;Adams walked before a one-out, bases-loaded walk by Jay made it 2-0.dddddddddddd. Pete Kozmas RBI single pushed the lead to 3-0. Carpenters three-run triple sailed just out of reach of a diving Justin Maxwell in right-centre and left St. Louis up 6-0. Maxwell crashed violently into the grass on the play and was taken out of the game and replaced by J.D. Martinez. The team said Maxwell had a concussion. A run-scoring single by Yadier Molina wrapped up the scoring for that inning and chased Harrell. He was replaced by Dallas Keuchel, who struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Chris Carter walked to start the second inning, but Westbrook got back on track after that, retiring the next 12 batters. The Astros didnt have another baserunner until the homer by Dominguez to start the sixth. Barnes walked and Jose Altuve singled before the triple by Wallace scored them to make it 9-3. Houston got within 9-4 on a sacrifice fly by Jason Castro. Carlos Pena doubled with two outs, but Westbrook limited the damage by retiring Martinez. Beltran launched a 73 mph curveball into the Crawford Boxes in left field for a two-run home run -- his 18th of the season -- to make it 9-0 in the sixth inning. Freese pushed the lead to 11-4 when he hit his fifth homer of the season off Travis Blackley in the seventh. Craigs two-run homer off Josh Fields made it 13-4 in the eighth. Houston added a run on an RBI single by Ronny Cedeno in the ninth. NOTES: The two-game series wraps up on Wednesday when Houstons Erik Bedard opposes Lance Lynn. ... Matheny said he had a couple of conversations with Holliday before moving him down in the order. "Its just a matter of trying to get some things going in a positive direction," Matheny said. "I think we need to be proactive in trying to make it happen. Not that that changes his approach or anything else but were going to try to make some changes to see if we can jumpstart it." Beltran hit in his place. ... Matheny said he has had a couple of good talks with ace Adam Wainwright since the pitcher lost his cool after being pulled in the seventh inning of a loss to Texas on Sunday. He said he was never mad at him and that he appreciates the intensity Wainwright shows on the mound. "I understand the whole dynamic," Matheny said. "I think he was frustrated and I think he kind of let his emotions get the best of him. That once again led to some great opportunities for us to have conversations together, and for him to have conversations with some guys on our team and some of the younger players about this." ... The Cardinals will skip Joe Kellys spot in the rotation because they have two days off this week. The rest of the rotation will remain the same. ... The Astros also changed their rotation because of two off days and will skip Keuchel. ... The Astros recalled infielders Wallace and Jake Elmore from Triple-A Oklahoma City. OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Clippers made a silent protest against owner Donald Sterling before Game 4 of their Western Conference playoff series against Golden State. The Warriors made a different kind of statement during the game. And just like that, a series pulled into a race-related scandal took another twist. Stephen Curry made a career playoff-high seven 3-pointers and scored 33 points, leading the Warriors past the Clippers 118-97 on Sunday to even their first-round series at two games apiece. "We wanted to come out and focus on all the work weve put in over the summer, throughout the course of the season to get ready for this moment in the playoffs and just have fun and enjoy it -- not let one person ruin it for everybody," Curry said. The game almost became an afterthought -- until tipoff anyway -- after an audio recording was posted Saturday online by TMZ purportedly of Sterling making comments urging a woman to not bring black people to his teams games. The alleged comments, which are under investigation by the NBA, have set off reactions of anger and calls for action through the league. Clippers players made a silent protest against Sterling by shedding their warm-up jerseys and going through the pregame routine with their red shirts on inside out. They also wore black bands on their wrists or arms and black socks in a show of solidarity. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said he knew what his players had planned but didnt voice his opinion. He said he wasnt thrilled about the demonstration, though he didnt elaborate why. Curry and company did a better job focusing from the start. The All-Star guard made his first five 3s to give Golden State a 20-point lead in the first quarter that held up most of the way. Curry shot 10 for 20 from the floor, including 7 of 14 from beyond the arc, and had seven assists and seven rebounds to help the Warriors snap a two-game losing skid. "I just thought they were the tougher team and it wasnt even close. Should have been a first round knockout," Rivers said. Golden State outshot Los Angeles 55.4 to 42.9 per cent. The Clippers had 19 turnovers, while the Warriors had a series-low 15 turnovers. Both coaches and players agreed that Sterlings purported comments affected their preparation, and neither side believed it was a determining factor in the outcome. "I think both teams were somewhat bothered by what has taken place the last 24 hours," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "But my guys just played with great energy, great effort." Rivers blamed himself for not getting his players ready. "Im not going to deny that we had other stuff," he said. "I just believe when the game starts, the game starts and nobody cares anymore. Golden State surely didnt care." Game 5 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Andre Iguodala added 22 points and nine assists, and David Lee, Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes each scored 15 as the Warriors went to a smaller lineup to regain their shooting touch in front of a roaring, gold-shirt wearing sellout crowd of 19,596 that stood after every swish. "It just all came together," said Iguodala, who also had nine assists and four rebounds. Jamal Crawford scored 26 points, and Blake Griffin had 21 points and six rebounds for a Clippers team wrapped up in the most talked-about topic in sports. "Maybe our focus wasnt in the right place would be the easiest way to say it," Clippers guard J.J. Redick said. New NBA Commissioner Adam Silver attended the game and met privately with former All-Star guard and current Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, who is advising the players union on the Sterling situation. Johnson even held a news conference during halftime that spilled well into the third quarter. Silver has said he hopes for a quick resolution after the league investigates, and that Sterling has already agreed not to attend Game 5. Johnson said the players trust Silver and are hoping for a quick resolution -- and the harshest penalty possible if the audio recording is authenticated. Once the ball was thrown up and the crowd roared, the Warriors quickly put the Clippers in a hole they could never recover from. Currys five 3-pointers in the first quarter tied a franchise-playoff record for a quarter, matching a mark he and Thompson set last year. Golden State led by 20 in the first quarter, 23 in the second quarter and 66-48 at the half. Jackson used a smaller lineup -- with power forward David Lee playing centre for long stretches instead of Jermaine ONeal, whom Jackson said requested the switch -- to spread the floor more than he had at any point in the series, which big man Andrew Bogut has missed with a fractured right rib. The Clippers never closed within single digits at any point in the second half. Curry kept on shooting -- and kept on hitting -- to send the series back to Los Angeles tied. And with so many in an uproar over Sterlings purported comments, theres no telling what the scene will be like at Staples Center. "Were going home now, and usually that would mean were going to our safe haven," Rivers said. "And I dont even know if thats true." NOTES: The Warriors have won 16 of their past 19 home games against the Clippers. ... Sterlings wife, Rochelle "Shelley" Sterling, sat in a courtside seat across from the Clippers bench. Boston College logged a 7-5 record this season, the second under head coach Steve Addazio, and the team went an even 4-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play to finish fourth in the Atlantic Division. The Eagles, took down another long-time rival in Syracuse in their regular-season finale, 28-7, to stop a two-game losing streak and bring a little bit of momentum into this matchup. BC is appearing in its 24th bowl game (13-10), and this is the second straight year in which the Eagles have participated in the postseason following a three-year drought. Addazio, who led Boston College to a 7-6 record in 2013, was recently given a contract extension through the 2020 season. We are honored to be headed to New York City to play Penn State in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. This is the perfect bowl destination for us as so many of our players, their families, our alumni and fans are from the New York metropolitan area, said Brad Bates, Boston College Director of Athletics. Penn State has one of the greatest traditions in college football and there is quite a history between our two programs. New York is within driving distance of our students and supporters, so we expect a great crowd of fans cheering on the Eagles. This is a wonderful reward for our student-athletes and we could not be more excited. The fact that Penn State is even in a bowl game this year is a major accomplishment, as the NCAA decided earlier in the season to lift its postseason ban on the school after lauding the Nittany Lions for their compliance to penalties imposed as a result of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. The 2014 campaign, the first under head coach James Franklin, started off positively enough as the team won its first four games. However, Penn State was brought back to reality as it promptly lost four in a row before stopping the bleeding with a 13-7 win at Indiana. That was followed by a 30-13 triumph over Temple, which ironically enough was coached by Addazio prior to him taking the BC job, but that was followed by consecutive defeats against Illinois and Michigan State to close things out. Still, at 6-6 (2-6 Big Ten), the Lions were offered the opportunity to play in the postseason for the 45th time (ninth-most in the FBS), winning 24 of them (fourth-best). Penn State, which last appeared in the 2012 TicketCity Bowl (a 30-14 loss to Houston) and is making its first trip to New York City since 1947, had all wins from 1998-2011 vacated by the NCAA. We are very excited and appreciative to be going to New York City to play in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, Franklin said. Penn State has a long and storied bowl history and we look forward to another opportunity to keep our family together. I am so happy for our players, especially the seniors, for this chance to play together one more time. The thing that makes Penn State special is the people, and we cant wait to see our alumni and fans storming New York and filling Yankee Stadium on December 27. The serries between these two northeastern schools dates back to 1949, and features 23 meetings.dddddddddddd Penn State won 19 of the first 20, but Boston College has won the last three, the most recent of which taking place on the Eagles home field on Sept. 11, 2004 (21-7). This game features one of the nations top rushing teams (BC, 215.8 ypg) against the No. 1 rushing defense (PSU, 84.8 ypg). The tandem of QB Tyler Murphy and RB Jon Hilliman spearhead the Boston College attack, with the former not only throwing for more than 1,500 and 11 TDs, but also leading the rushing effort with 1,079 yards and 10 scores. Hilliman has churned out 712 yards and found the end zone 12 times for a team that puts up 25.9 ppg behind a typical output of 383.8 ypg. No pass catcher has more than the 26 grabs for 342 yards and three TDs belonging to Josh Bordner. The Boston College defense has had its ups and downs this season, but the units overall yield of 20.5 points and 313.5 yards per game is certainly respectable. The Eagles gave up at least 30 points three times, but held several opponents in check, including defending national champion Florida State in the penultimate game of the regular season, as the Seminoles managed just 20 points in a three-point victory. Like Penn State, BC has also stood strong against the run, permitting 95.5 ypg and only 3.1 ypc. Its effort against the pass hasnt been terrible, with foes generating 218 ypg that way, and the Eagles have logged 31 sacks while coming up with a dozen takeaways. Justin Simmons leads the club with 70 tackles and two INTs, and while no player had more than four sacks, Josh Keys was credited with 11.5 of the teams 84 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Despite throwing for a Penn State sophomore record 2,606 yards, QB Christian Hackenberg had a down year with only eight touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Despite his signal callers relative ineffectiveness, DaeSean Hamilton had a tremendous rookie campaign in reeling in 75 balls for 848 yards. He did only have one TD catch though. Eugene Lewis tallied 48 receptions for 669 yards and a score, while Jesse James found the end three times on his 35 grabs. Sophomore Akeel Lynch ran for 603 yards and four TDs, but really came on in the last three games, logging more than half of those yards (318) with three scores. Bill Belton scored six rushing TDs in amassing 518 yards for the Lions. Penn State put up just 19.8 ppg during the regular season, but allowed only 17.7 ppg. As mentioned, the teams stance against the run is the primary reason it was even competitive most times out, although the effort against the pass was certainly nothing to complain about as foes generated just 185 ypg and only eight TDs through the air. Senior Mike Hull logged a Big Ten-best 134 tackles this year, and he is just four shy of cracking the top-5 in school history for a single season. Nyeem Wartman was the closest player to Hull, but he is well off the pace set by the All-American linebacker, having logged 64 stops. Anthony Zettel and Deion Barnes have combined for 14 of the teams 30 sacks, while Zettel and Adrian Amos each have three picks. Sensational skates at the Grand Prix Final are boding well for Sochi, as the fields close in and rivalries heat up. As the season progresses, the gaps are narrowing and the fields are closing in on the leaders. A week ago, there wasnt an obvious challenger in the mens or pairs event. In fact, heading into the Grand Prix Final in Japan, it was difficult to imagine that the defending champions could be beaten. Patrick Chan had an enormous 30-point lead over the rest of the men in this seasons scores and so did the defending world pair champions from Russia - Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov - who had the same 30-point margin over the rest of the teams. Patrick faltered in the short program in Japan and Tatiana and Max in the free program to open the door, but what was intriguing in both cases was the way that the challengers stepped up and that the underdogs won. Yuzuru Hanyu from Japan hit one out of the park in the short program breaking Patricks world record that he set just two weeks ago. It all came together for Yuzuru in that performance, as he aggressively attacked the jumps and played with the music to sell his program to his hometown audience. It was an easy sell and they ate it up to help lift Yuzuru to a record-breaking skate where he missed the 100-point mark by a slim .16. As Coach Brian Orser said when the marks were posted, "Sooooo close!" Patrick and Yuzuru both delivered strong free programs each with one mistake, but the edge went to Hanyu and Patrick had his first loss of the season. Patrick, of course - barring injury - has his Olympic spot locked up. Theres no doubt he will go as this countrys No. 1 guy. Thats not the case for Yuzuru, whos fighting for his Olympic life. Hes up against five other guys who are all capable and who are all fighting for three spots. With the new world record in the short program, the second best freeskate and total scores ever and with the win over Chan, one would think Yuzuru might be awarded one of those coveted spots to Sochi. But no such spot has been given and the Japanese team will be named after their nationals - which take place just before Christmas. Patrick can find new motivation in the fact that hell be pushed and he will indeed need two great skates like he had two weeks ago in Paris to win Olympic Gold. The Russian pairs take the same knowledge into the holiday season with the loss to the German team of Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy. It is the kind of knowledge one needs at this time of year, lest one sits back and gets too comfortable. It was expected that the Ice Dance would be a close contest in Japan. While defending world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White received better scores all season than Olympic Champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, one could sense that Tessa and Scott were working out the kinks early in the series. And in Japan they put the technical glitches behind them and had stunning performances in both the Short and Free Dance. Meryl and Charlie brought their A game as well and came away with the win. And once again we were reminded how lucky we are to have two teams of their calibre at the same time. It was a terrific event and a moment that stood out for me was the look on the faces of Tessa and Scott after the free dance. Total satisfaction - a look thats been missing of late. When youre competing there are always the little things that youve done better in practice or things you had to fight through, that werent quite right and when you finish your skate those things immediately flash through your mind and the instant self evaluation is briefly written on your face. Tessas appraisal was immediate. Her eyes flashed in delight and she said yes. Totally satisfied. That was the performance they had been reaching for. They now have the momentum and as their rivalry demands, will have to build on it. They have to dig deep and soul search in order to answer the questions. "What more can we do?" "Whats next to fine tune?" The same questions that Meryl and Charlie are now asking in light of their narrow win. This is why were so fortunate to have these two great teams. As they drive each other to strategically find the edge, they find new levels of excellence and we the audience are ultimately the winners. In the ladies event the clear winner in Japan was indeed the favourite going in, hometown heroine Olympic Silver medalist Mao Asada. While it was no surprise to me that Mao won gold what was surprising, actually I was quite shocked, was her captivating short program. In fact, it ranks as one of my all time favourite skates. In a word, she was brilliant and when I rack my brain for comparisons, it would be Olympic champion and the defending world champion Yuna Kim. Yuna missed the Grand Prix season due to injury and competed in a B international to gain some competition mileage for her new material, while the Final was taking place. She received some impressive scores and so the stage is set for a showdown in the ladies event in Sochi. Mao and Yuna - a rematch from 2010. Yuna by all accounts is on track to be as good as ever, while Mao is new and improved. Her jumping arsenal is bigger and better and artistically she is skating, with more joy, heartfelt emotion and conviction than ever before. Let the games begin!
